Electronic Design Software Company Teams with UKESF to Promote UK Skills Investment
EDA Solutions has teamed up with the UK Electronics Skills Foundation (UKESF) to source its latest undergraduate intern from one of the top UK universities in microelectronics. The UKESF Scholarship scheme seeks to encourage top electronic engineering students to move into industry by providing funding and placement opportunities working in partnership with leading UK electronics firms.
In the past, the companies involved have tended to be the larger multinational corporations, such as ARM, CSR, Dialog Semiconductor and Imagination Technologies; however, this year EDA Solutions, an eight-person organisation based in Fareham, Hampshire has joined the scheme.
EDA Solutions is the European representative for a number of microelectronics companies covering the design, manufacture, assembly and test of analogue and mixed-signal integrated circuits. Students taking placements with the company will gain an unrivalled insight into this complex area of the industry. In return, EDA Solutions will gain a bright and highly motivated employee for the year and also has a chance to steer their studies in the direction of microelectronics, especially in analogue, and thus hope to reduce the growing skill gap in this sector of the UK microelectronics industry.
"UKESF is providing us with a great opportunity to promote analogue electronics to students in the UK and help us solve our biggest growth problem, namely the lack of analogue engineers in the industry', said Paul Double, Managing Director of EDA Solutions. "It is ideal for a small company such as ours. We are guaranteed a top student from a leading UK university, while UKESF performs the sourcing of students, promotion and administration of the scheme. We've always found our student interns to be excellent additions to our staff and it's great that we can also help them further their knowledge and experience in the industry."
"UKESF are helping students become associated with world leading companies and gain contacts within the world of Engineering."said Michael Barter, the EDA Solutions' sponsored student. I'm looking forward to a great opportunity to learn about life in industry and put my engineering knowledge into practice in the real world as well as the chance to develop my analogue design skills."
"We're delighted to be able to help a small yet growing company like EDA Solutions. Our scholarship scheme was designed with small companies in mind, where the resource for a formal university liaison programme is difficult to justify. Through our university partnerships, we were able to introduce EDA Solutions to a good selection of top quality candidates for its scholarship," said Wendy Daniell, UKESF Programme Manager."
"EDA Solutions is keen to attract more young engineers into analogue design, an area now considered as an esoteric art in our industry. We support employers in cultivating an early interest for subjects important to the industry before students graduate, in turn helping students make informed decisions on areas to specialise."
In addition to the University Scholarship Scheme, UKESF also organises industry-sponsored summer schools for sixth-form students who are keen to find out more about the exciting career opportunities in the electronics industry. Further information for students interested in a placement in the electronics industry, or companies in the industry interested in the scheme, is available on the UKESF website at www.ukesf.org.

UKESF is a charity registered in Scotland (SC043940).
A collaboration between public bodies, private companies and UK universities, it was co-founded in 2010 by the Department for Business, Innovation and Skills (BIS), NMI, Semta and industry partners. UKESF addresses the threat of the diminishing engineering skills capability in the UK electronics sector. Its principal aim is to secure a sustainable supply of good quality, industry-ready graduate engineers for the industry to maintain and grow its global leadership position.
The UKESF programme includes a scholarship scheme linking employers with undergraduates for sponsorship and work experience. Since its inception, 120 students have been awarded UKESF scholarships and the number of partner universities has grown to 11.
